Attractions in the Ruhr Region
Metropolitan Region Rhein-Ruhr: Worth a visit
Once upon a time there was a young girl ... and because she had to sleep by the hearth in the cinders and always looked dusty and dirty, they called her Cinderella. Who doesn't know the famous fairy tale from the Grimm brothers? The Ruhr Region also used to be covered in ashes and soot during the peak of the mining industry ... and has undergone a fairy tale-like structural transformation in the past decades.
Instead of the coal and mining industry, the economy is characterized today by modern service providers. You can find everything here - from young start-ups to DAX companies. And tourism is playing an ever growing role in the Ruhr Region.
The best example is the UNESCO world cultural heritage Zollverein Coal Mine: As late as the 1970s, 304 ovens heated up to 1,000 C° processed 10,000 tons of coal daily here. Now the grounds attract over 1.5 Million visitors a year with events, exhibits and gastronomy.
But also the Ruhrtal Bike Path, the Industrial Culture Route, the Zeiss Planetarium, the Jahrhunderthalle, the Folkwang Museum, the Mining Museum, the Aalto Theater, the Gasometer and Sea Life in Oberhausen, the Veltins Arena and the Signal-Iduna Park are all popular attractions in the Ruhr Area.
